Makeup Q&A

Hello everyone! Here I have compiled a list of questions that people have personally asked me about makeup or ones that I have read on forums for the past few years, and I have answered every one of them to the best of my ability. The purpose behind this Q&A is to refer someone to this page when they ask me for help so I don't always have to explain something over and over again. I will continue to add on more answers, as more questions come about...so here it goes!

1- How do you wing your eyeliner? I can never get mine to match.

  • - Practice, practice, practice, and you'll get it. Mine never completely match because my eyes also have different shapes. One lid is flat and the other one is more round.  The only trick I use is to draw the line from the outer corner of the eye and point it out towards end of my eyebrow, and always after my eyebrows are filled in.

2- Is there anything else I can do with a CS Blush/Contour palette? The quality is awful and generic.
  • -If you have no use for the blushes, take them out and re-use the palette. I did this with my 88 Warm Palette. The glue has a strong hold on the plastic setting so it destroyed all the eyeshadows in the process and made a huge mess. I'm not sure if the blush palette is made the same way, but it's worth a shot if you want to customize your own palette.

3-I have combo/oily skin, and I was wondering if there's any foundations out there for sensitive skin. Lately, I've been using Maybelline Super Stay, it hasn't caked up but lately I've been noticing excess oil and breakouts. Then I decided to try Revlon Colorstay. I can honestly say that I dislike this foundation because it makes my face look cakey and the next day I have a new pimple. So I was wondering if there is an inexpensive foundation out there fit for my skin type, that is very sensitive, and won't break me out.
  • -Loose mineral foundations like Bare Minerals work best with oily, sensitive skin. Full coverage foundations like Revlon Colorstay (both oily and dry formulations) are very thick and will clog your pores, causing breakouts for some people. It seems that Neutrogena Healthy Skin Blends might be a better option for you if you're looking for a liquid. However, since your skin is oily, this finish will only emphasize that. So I suggest mixing the Neutrogena with the Revlon to thin out the consistency, making it less cakey on your skin but not overly oily either.  This way, you won't waste an entire bottle of foundation. You can mix them in your hand before you apply, or  you can put your mix in a little plastic craft jar. Also, get yourself a good primer and MAC Fix+ Spray, this prevents a lot of the cakey-ness.

4-I'm having difficulty with my undertone. I have tried the vein trick on the arms, but blue nor green jump out at me. I have mostly 'cool' attributes- pale, blue/grey eyes, dark blonde hair and silver looks better than gold on me.
  • - I'm pretty sure you have cool undertones. I struggled for the longest time figuring out mine! The vein test never worked for me. Mine look green on the palms of my hands and wrists but they're blue in my arms. IMO, the best way to determine your skin tone is by your hair and eye color. Cool tones are typically blue and ash. Ash can be blonde hair or ash brown hair which lack gold tones when it hits the light. If your eyes have any trace of blue as well, then you're most likely cool. Also, the next time you're at a makeup counter or the drug store, swatch a yellow toned foundation, and a pink toned one. If the yellow one makes you look like you have jaundice, than you're definitely cool.  If neither of them look right, they're either too light or dark, or you could be neutral. To test if you're neutral, mix together a yellow toned foundation and a pink toned one in your hand, then swatch it. Also consider your ethnic heritage. If you're African American, Native American, Middle Eastern, Asian, or Hispanic, you most likely have warmer undertones. I am mostly German, French, Greek, Scottish, and I am cool.

5- How can I brighten up/highlight my under eye area?
  • - Benefit's Powderflage does a pretty good job, it also sets concealer.

6- My primer dried up! Is there anyway I can revive it?
  • - When my gel liner dies up, I run my hair dryer over it for about 5 minutes and it's good as new, try that maybe?

7- What do you recommend with regards to putting the primer over the foundation, once it's on your eyelid or do you think not to use the foundation there? I noticed that Marlena's eyelids always look great with regards to coverage and I wondered if she puts foundation down first then primer or vice versa...
  • - My eyelids are a little veiny and discolored, so I always put the primer on over top of the foundation. I don't really see anything wrong with it, if you need the extra coverage.

8- I'm looking for a recommendation for a good primer, blush and bronzer for pale, dry, skin. A lady recommended Smashbox's PF Primer, but I've heard Benefit's Porefessional works well too?
  • - Ha! I am also in the dry, pale, skin club. I recommend NYX Powder Blushes. You will love Natural and Peach. Maybe Angel, if your skin is warmer. I have swatches of them on my blog. If you're looking for something more long lasting, try Tarte's 12 Hr Blush in Dollface, it looks great on pretty much everyone, IMO. NYX's Taupe is a good matte bronzer and Smash Photofinish is also great for dry skin. Only use Porefessional if you have a problem with large pores.

9- I use concealer under my eyes and set it with powder but by the end of the day, I have really dark circles under my eyes. How would I get rid of this problem?
  • - You should try a setting spray. ;)  http://modelinabottle.com/

10- I keep all my makeup in my bathroom, and my bathroom is tiny. The drawers that I have for my makeup and other toiletries are smaller than standard drawers.  My room and my bathroom doesn't really have enough free wall space for that... plus my parents don't really like me sticking nails or tacks in the wall as much as possible. Do any of you have any storage suggestions?
  • -If you can't put up any shelves, scotch tape and cardboard makeup packing is your friend. You just have to keep all the boxes your makeup comes in. It looks silly, but it's convenient. I have one taped to the side of my 3 drawer Sterilite container with an ELF matifying powder in it. Soon I'm going to tape a couple to the wall or my mirror. You can also buy small plastic baskets with suction cups on the back that are used for the shower and stick those to your mirror. They sell them super cheap at places like dollar stores or Big Lots.

11- I was looking at NYX Matte Lip Creams...I like how they sort of "stain" but they seem like they might dry out my lips. Do you like them or not?
  • - I have one and I like it. My lips are always dry so it's hard for me to say...BUT you can always top it with a lip balm or clear lipgloss and it shouldn't dry them out.

12- I was thinking about purchasing a NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil and I was wondering what you thought of them.
  • PROS- It really does make an excellent base. Eyeshadows stick well to it, and the colors are more vibrant.
  • CONS- I find it really difficult to apply evenly. If you use too much, it can crease or cake up. IMO, I think it's pretty good for the price.

13- I use MAC's Prolong Wear foundation but by the time I get to school my nose gets really shiny and I have to keep reapplying powder. How do I get rid of this?
  • -I have the same problem! It's the only oily spot on my face. Before I apply my foundation, I use blotting papers and I use a clay mask on it once a week, it helps a little. It's definitely good to stick with a matte foundation if you have oily skin, but I know of a lot of people breaking out from MAC's Pro Longwear. I'm not an expert on skin or anything, but it might be clogging your pores and making the shine worse? Also, you should try a different powder or change up your facial cleanser and see how that works out for you. Cetaphil has worked wonders for my skin.

14- Is wearing eyeliner on the waterline safe for wearing contact lenses?
  • - I've been wearing contacts for 7 years and haven't had any problems with it. The only disadvantage of wearing eyeliner with contacts is the cloudiness which means that the eyeliner is smudging off and on to your lenses. Any eyeliner that is safe on the waterline will still be safe on your conact lenses just make sure you clean them daily. To prevent it from getting in your eye and on the lense, pull the lower lid down a little after applying your eyeliner and hold it like that for about 15 seconds so it has time to dry. Gel liner will definitely stay on longer but if you don't let it dry, it can be messy and kind of difficult to clean off your lenses.

15- My cheeks are naturally red, it always shows through my foundation and it doesn't mix right with my blush.  Any suggestions?
  • - If you are happy with your natural flush, put the concealer only under the cheek bone and down to the jaw or just conceal the parts that you don't want flushed. You could also try the SB Photofinish Primer in green, this neutralizes the red. http://sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P9889&categoryId=C10905

16-What are some makeup ideas for me? I have blond hair, blue/grey eyes, an oval face, and beige skin.
  • -If you want to enhance your eye color- use a navy blue, grayish blue, copper, rust, or even gold as it is flattering with every eye color. If you have an oval face, you can pretty much wear anything! Contouring under the cheek bones, and highlighting the top of them will add more definition to the face. Since you're blonde, you will look amazing with a hot bombshell kind of look, like a light pink lip and a silvery/black smokey eye.
